Best Overall Smartphone | Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ | The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus is, without a doubt, the best smartphone in 2019. Now, you might argue the Mate 30 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro’s case, and they do make quite a compelling case but the Note 10+ works on every level. To win the best overall smartphone, the handset in question had to get everything right – Design, Display, Performance, Camera, Battery, and Software. Firstly, Samsung’s Note 10+ looks and feels more like a 2019 smartphone than any of the three iPhone 11 models. Moreover, the phone has arguably the best display of any smartphone, refresh rate aside. The Galaxy Note 10 Plus may not be the best in any one particular area, but it does a great job in every area single area, where Apple fails in design and Huawei falls short in software. Moreover, for a premium smartphone, the Note 10+ delivers excellent value, it isn’t just 20K less than the iPhone Pro but also offers more RAM and four times the storage.
Best Smartphone Camera | Apple iPhone 11 Pro | While the Huawei Mate 30 Pro has one of the best camera setups on the planet; availability is a major issue. And, we’re only looking at smartphones available globally. So, we turned to the next best smartphone camera, which is one of the best of the best when it comes to smartphone photography and the absolute best for video recording. The Apple iPhone 11 Pro’s triple rear camera setup coupled with its excellent new features, make this camera setup second to none. The cameras include a 12-megapixel, f/1.8 primary sensor, a 12-megapixel f/2.0 telephoto lens, and a 12-megapixel f/2.4 ultrawide lens. On the front, the latest iPhone offers a 12-megapixel f/2.2 selfie camera. If not for the significant improvements in camera performance, the iPhone 11 Pro handsets would be no different from the iPhone Xs.
Best Flagship Killer | Realme X2 Pro | This year has been incredible for the “flagship killer”. The number of flagship killers has nearly quadrupled in 2019. The primary goal of a flagship killer is to deliver a premium smartphone experience with as few compromises as possible. And, no smartphone does this better than the Realme X2 Pro. Off all the contenders – Redmi K20 Pro, OnePlus 7T, LG G8s ThinQ – none offered the same value proposition as the X2 Pro. The 90Hz display on this phone is bright and colour accurate, the battery is adequate to get you through the day, and super-fast charging means you only need 30 minutes to go from 15 to 100 percent, the design feels pretty premium, and the Snapdragon 855+ offers excellent performance. The 64-megapixel quad-camera setup is also one of the best at 30K. However, the software experience isn’t the best, but software can always be improved with time and seems like it will be with ColorOS 7. If you’re looking for a flagship killer with an IP rating, the LG G8s ThinQ perfectly fits the bill.
Best Gaming Smartphone | Asus ROG Phone 2 | Gaming smartphones have officially landed in 2019, making a pretty strong presence. However, of all the gaming smartphones we’ve seen, the Asus ROG Phone II offers a complete package. The ROG phone packs an improved cooling system and a powerful Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC, which will make easy work of any game you throw at it. Moreover, the ROG Phone 2 is also the only handset to sport a 120Hz AMOLED screen, which will ensure the smoothest gaming experience on titles that support the high refresh rate. Additionally, there is a massive 6,000 mAh battery inside this beast as well as some of the best audio we’ve seen on a smartphone. Gamers will also love the programmable Air Triggers buttons on the side of the handset. Gaming aside, the Asus ROG Phone 2 had a surprisingly good camera for a gaming smartphone with quality in the OnePlus 7T and Oppo Reno 10 Zoom Edition ballpark.
Best Accessible Smartphone Innovation | Asus 6z | There are four phones that fit the built for most innovative smartphone concept – Nubia Z20, Vivo Nex 3 5G, Samsung Galaxy A80, and Asus 6z. However, our first choice was the Asus 6z and its flippable camera module, and here’s why. While the Vivo Nex 3 pushes boundaries of screen real estate, it doesn’t really offer much else in terms of innovation. Both the Asus 6z and Samsung Galaxy A80 use the main camera module that flips around when you need to use the front camera. However, the Asus 6z wins this bout as its flipping camera module offers more flexibility than the Galaxy A80. Add to that, the 6z packs a flagship-grade chipset and costs little over 10K less than the A80. The Asus 6z currently starts at Rs 27,999 and holds one of the top three spots in DxOMarks list of best selfie cameras. But the Nubia Z20’s dual-display strategy also allows you to use the rear camera for selfies. Where it falls short is availability and then there’s the obvious risk of dropping the phone display first.
Best Mid-Range Smartphone | Realme X2 | In India, any smartphone under 20000 rupees falls in the mid-range. The biggest factor in determining the best mid-ranger was value. The mid-range is easily one of India’s most competitive smartphone space, but after taking a close look at all the candidates, we’ve determined that the Realme X2 730G is the best of the lot. The recently launched X2 offers one of the best mid-range chipsets, a decent Super AMOLED panel, one of the best camera setups in this price range, a capable battery that charges up pretty quickly, and a premium design. While the X2 does seem like it's lacking on the software front, Realme has promised improvements when the next version of ColorOS hits its smartphones in Q1 next year. It’s worth noting; if the camera is all you’re looking for in the mid-range, you can save a couple of thousand by getting the Redmi Note 8 Pro or Realme XT.
Best Affordable Smartphone | Lenovo K10 Note | Another competitive space in India’s smartphone market is the affordable range. After taking a look at everything on display – the Redmi Note 8, Realme 5s and Vivo U10 – and decided that none of the above made the cut. Our pick for best smartphone under 10000 rupees has to go to the Lenovo K10 Note. You may be right to argue that the Redmi Note 8 and Realme 5s’ 48-megapixel primary sensors, but what the K10 Note offers is a more complete package. Lenovo’s software is pretty clean and comes quite close to stock Android. Moreover, you also get a decent-sized battery and a fast-charging adapter in the box. Another thing that sets the K10 Note apart is the Snapdragon 710 SoC, which is quite a capable chipset if you’re into gaming. The Lenovo K10 Note is the only smartphone in the affordable space that can deliver on all fronts – performance, software, battery and camera.
Best Foldable Smartphone | Huawei Mate X | When it comes to foldable smartphones, availability goes out of the window as the Galaxy Fold is the only smartphone available in multiple countries across the globe. However, in terms of which foldable smartphone is the most practical, we’d have to go with Huawei’s Mate X. The Moto Razr may be practical, but it boasts the same specs as a mid-range smartphone, while the Galaxy Fold may pack flagship specs but isn’t quite functional as a smartphone. The form factor on the front, when the device is folded, isn’t practical as a phone. The Huawei Mate X ticks all the boxes and offers the best transition between smartphone and tablet.
